Half Day Parent Workshop - Virtual (October 4, 2026)
Many parents assume that if their child attends a good university, success will naturally follow. In reality, the transition from college to adulthood is complex and requires unique support that is difficult to find. Even highly capable young adults can struggle to translate opportunity into independence as they navigate college. This workshop translates decades of research on young adult development into practical guidance for parents.
Dr. Alexis Redding is an award-winning educator at Harvard Graduate School of Education and one of the nation's foremost experts on the transition to adulthood. In this workshop, she will give you the research-based playbook for helping your child thrive academically, emotionally, and professionally during the college years and beyond.
What you will learn:
How young adults actually develop independence (and why many well-intentioned parenting strategies unintentionally delay it).
How to have productive conversations about the future without triggering defensiveness or withdrawal.
How parents can help young adults launch successfully from college into meaningful work and adult independence.
How to support independence without undermining it.
How to help your child successfully navigate both opportunities and setbacks in college.
How to encourage meaningful career exploration to avoid the ‘default’ path and prepare for post-collegiate life.
You will leave understanding:
The hidden pressures facing today’s college students from identity development, social comparison, and anxiety about career paths.
Practical frameworks for when to intervene and when to step back to allow room for growth and resilience.
Approaches that reduce defensiveness and help young adults take ownership of their choices.
Strategies to support students navigating academic struggles, motivation issues, and career uncertainty.
This workshop is designed for parents who:
have a child entering or currently attending college
are raising capable, motivated young adults
want research-based insight into this developmental stage
are thoughtful about how to support independence
Note: This program is not intended for families navigating acute academic or behavioral crises. Instead, it is designed for parents who want to better understand the transition to adulthood and support their student’s long-term success.
Space is intentionally limited to allow for meaningful discussion and individualized questions.
